BREIS – The Right Person ft. Ebisan (Nigeria/UK)
HipHop artist and rhyme book author BREIS talks about the pressure, relatives put on younger family members in order to marry them off: „The pressure to be married in some cultures can be really overwhelming at times and I wanted to express the fact that yes marriage is beautiful but people have to get there without that constant external pressure”.
The Guardian called BREIS „one of the best kept secrets in British Hip Hop”. His name is (pronounced Breeze) is an acronym for “Brother Reaching Each Inner Soul”. He is based in both Nigeria and the UK and is giving hiphop inspired writing workshops to students in the UK and beyond. He wants to motivate kids, that learning can be much easier if it involves fun. This has lead him to write up a book that comes with an audio CD on writing hiphop lyrics: „Brilliant Rappers Educate Intelligent Students“. BREIS had the idea for „The right person“ on a trip to Nigeria as well as talking to his uncle in the UK. It features singer songwriter, Ebisan and male vocalist Mide on the chorus. The music comes from Nigerian producer Dokta Frabz (Doctor of Flavour, Rhythm and Bluez), who has worked with many Nigerian vocalists like Femcee Weird MC or Naija pop stars Davido and Wande Coal.
The video was shot in Lagos. It shows his uncle and his aunty giving him a hard time about marriage, while he explains:
„I don’t wanna rush into love and risk it. Kiss quickly end up another statistic. Rush into marriage and life can worsen. That’s why I’m searching for the right person.“
The video is divided into three sections: „The search“, „The selfie groupie“ and „The right person“. In the third chapter BREIS finally finds the right person for him. She sits on a bench next to him, not busy on her mobile-phone doing selfies, but reading Seun Odukoya‘s novel “Saving Dapo”.
